The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) seeks a Program Manager to manage its membership program and aspects of the annual conference. The position is located in Washington, DC. See www.ampo.org for information regarding AMPO.

Job Duties

Membership

• Manage membership program, working directly with over 200 MPOs and transportation consulting firms.
• Answer inquiries and build and maintain relationships with members.
• Maintain membership database.
• Work with bookkeeper to generate, send, and track membership invoices.
• Provide membership report to AMPO Board.

Annual Conference

• Responsible for the planning of AMPO’s Annual Conference, working directly with AMPO Technical Committee to develop program content.
• Manage all logistics onsite at the Annual Conference hotel.
• Solicit and secure sponsors and exhibitors.
• Work closely with the host MPO member organization to develop mobile workshops, organize volunteers, and other Annual Conference logistics.
• Assist executive director with managing and monitoring conference budget.

Communications

• Compile news from federal agencies, associations, MPOs, and policy and technical updates to include in a biweekly electronic newsletter, aMPO eMAIL.
• Edit transportation policy related documents from AMPO; including white papers, letters to congressional and executive branch offices, and updates to members.
• Update AMPO website, using Word Press.

Other

• Assist with organizing AMPO Board and Committee activities.
• Develop and implement annual awards program, honoring organization and individual leaders in transportation planning.
• Represent AMPO at industry meetings with federal and association partners and stakeholders.

Required/Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university, with three to five years of work experience, preferably in an association or non-profit setting.
• Ideal candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal, editing, and organization skills; takes initiative; meeting planning experience; knowledge of WordPress; and ability to work in a small, fast paced office.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required.
• Occasional travel is required.

This position is located in the Office of Safety Programs, Office of Safety, Federal Highway Administration, Washington, DC. The incumbent serves as a transportation specialist and provides advice to Safety Leadership on highway safety programs.

You will serve as a nationally recognized authority and advisor to Safety Leadership in identifying, developing and delivering safety workforce competency programs and products to reduce the number and severity of highway crashes, and other highway safety programs. You will also serve as the co-champion for the FHWA Safety Discipline and the program manager for the Roadway Safety Professional Capacity Building Program (RSPBC). As Safety Discipline co-champion, you will work toward improving the capacity of FHWA’s workforce in safety related competencies. As the RSPBC Manager, you will also help a broad range of roadway safety professionals acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to implement safety programs, strategies, and countermeasures.

The ideal candidate for this position is a mid-career or senior level professional with experience in identifying, planning, and implementing new national program initiatives and leading the development and implementation of programs for outreach and public information to improve the proficiency of highway safety professionals.  He/she has a high degree of independence in planning, prioritizing, scheduling, and carrying out assignments and maintaining effective working relationships as a leader or member of teams or working groups.  In addition, the ideal candidate has excellent person-to-person and written communication skills.

Duties:

• Provide leadership in technical, programmatic engineering and policy assistance to FHWA field offices, State and local agencies, and other internal and external customers to implement safety programs for all levels of government.
• Provide resources to help safety experts and specialists develop critical knowledge and skills within the roadway safety workforce.
• Lead the development and implementation of programs for outreach and public information to improve the proficiency of highway safety professionals.
• Coordinate with other Federal, State, and local agencies and professional organizations and serve on intra-agency task forces with partners to improve the safety workforces’ knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Plan and conduct briefings and regional and national meetings for FHWA, State, and local safety professionals and other highway safety-related organizations.
• Identify customer’s needs and provide resources to facilitate the deployment of roadway safety tools.

The Northeast Corridor Commission

Congress created the Northeast Corridor Infrastructure and Operations Advisory Commission (Commission) to help coordinate planning and investment across all owners of and operators on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) railroad network, including Amtrak, states, commuter railroads, and freight railroads. The Commission is comprised of representatives from each of the NEC states, Amtrak, and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), with non-voting representatives from freight railroads and states with connecting corridors. The Commission is supported by a full-time staff in Washington, DC. The Commission is accepting applications for a Transportation Analyst position located in Washington, DC.

Summary of Duties

Specific responsibilities will consist of policy research and writing, transportation planning and analysis, analysis of financial and operational data related to the allocation of operating and capital costs in the NEC, development of Commission products and materials, website content development and other tasks as assigned. The position will cover activities both technical and administrative in nature:

• Assist in the development of Commission reports and presentations through data analysis and the development of written material. Work will frequently involve making technical information accessible for non-technical audiences.
• Assist in the coordination of the Commission’s many stakeholders, including Amtrak, the U.S. DOT, the Northeast states and state DOTs, commuter rail agencies, freight railroads, and others. Work will frequently involve coordinating assistance provided by staff at various stakeholder agencies.
• Support the organization and delivery of quarterly Commission meetings and periodic committee meetings including the management of pre-meeting logistics, the development of meeting materials, and the preparation of meeting minutes.
• Assist in the analysis of financial and operational data in support of the Commission’s role in supporting cost allocation in the Northeast Corridor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Public Policy, Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Business, or related field.
• One to two years of work experience with some direct experience in the field of transportation. Masters degree may substitute for work experience.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
• Interest in transportation issues.
• Ability to multi-task effectively while remaining flexible in a fast-paced environment and work collaboratively with staff at all levels while successfully challenging conventional practices and incorporating new approaches.
• Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Office tools, including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

The successful candidate will oversee the development and implementation of the policies, regulations, parameters, and general guidance by which all division offices and state transportation departments carry out the Federal-aid highway program.

The position requires the Director to lead national transportation efforts and develop and implement national policies and performance standards to allow for a successful delivery of the Federal-aid highway program. The Director will also address program issues with members of Congress, state elected officials, and other executive departments as an FHWA representative.
