The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), the nation’s largest nonprofit association representing the transportation technology industry, is seeking an External Affairs Manager to support the organization’s communications, marketing and legislative outreach activities. ITS America’s membership includes nearly 500 public agencies, private sector companies, and research and academic institutions as well as 27 State Chapter affiliates across 40 states dedicated to advancing the research, development and deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve the nation’s surface transportation network. The External Affairs Manager will be responsible for the following activities:

• Plan and manage media, Congressional and stakeholder outreach events;
• Assist in maintaining relationships and managing logistics related to ITS America’s Legislative Steering Committee;
• Plan and manage monthly Smart Solution Spotlight award media events and promotional activities;
• Write and manage the distribution of ITS America’s weekly e-newsletter, the Transportation Technology News;
• Schedule and manage logistics for monthly Congressional Roundtable breakfast or lunch events between ITS America members and Members of Congress;
• Draft press releases, media statements, talking points, marketing materials, member announcements, Web content, social media content and other communications as needed;
• Perform occasional legislative and regulatory research and writing;
• Write, edit and update copy and graphics regularly on www.itsa.org;
• Assist with media outreach and marketing activities for ITS America’s quarterly regional event series;
• Manage logistics and outreach for ITS America’s annual Transportation Technology Showcase and Reception on Capitol Hill;
• Assist with media and marketing activities for major industry events including ITS America’s Annual Meetings and the ITS World Congress;
• Monitor transportation and technology-related news and compile daily press clips for distribution;
• Maintain and expand media, Congressional and stakeholders contacts and distribution lists; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The incumbent will report to the Senior Vice President for Government and External Affairs, with day-to-day management provided by the Director of Communications in coordination with the Vice President for Legislative Affairs. Candidates should have at least 2-5 years of relevant experience, extremely strong writing skills with a working knowledge of AP Style, the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and attention to detail. Media relations and event marketing, Congressional relations, and transportation and/or technology policy experience are all a strong plus. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Although the utopians have talked about intelligent transportation since the 1950s, in the real-world terms it’s still a very new concept. The EU began work on the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) framework in the early part of last decade, the U.S. Department of Transport hosted its first Connected Vehicle workshop earlier this year; and truly coordinated and integrated transportation systems exist only as computer simulations or localized pilot schemes. But the potential for the ITS is tremendous and it was fully recognized at this year’s Smart Mobility World exhibition held from 25th – 27th September in Turin, Italy.

The highlight of the exhibition was the Road Management Tool Project (RMT) – a collaboration between the Turin city council and Tecnositaf S.p.A. It’s a 16,000-mile long network of integrated road communications featuring an independent uniform data network. The network is able to capture and transmit precise geo-referenced data (video surveillance, audio and real-time measurements) across a single network and store it all in a single database.The data will be accessible to both the authorities and drivers enabling them to make better decisions and avoid congestion.

There have been attempts to build similar systems in Europe but they have always failed because they involved several departments arguing with each other and trying to make various alien data formats compatible with each other. The RMT boasts a modular design. New functionality can be added-on, and the network can be expanded as far as necessary.

Connected Vehicles joining the Network

Once the RMT system has been tested locally, it’s expected the same concept would spread around the whole country. It is likely that other countries will look to implement a similar system.

The beauty of RMT is that its basis is so simple – the architecture is built around the IP protocol – standard that is used on a wide variety of connected devices. It’s much cheaper to use because you’ll be able to log on using your existing PC or mobile device. Since the RMT is compatible with other technologies, it will make sense for the car manufacturers to comply with the network and build cars that can communicate with the RMT directly.

The organizers of Smart Mobility World have estimated that the global market value for the Connected Vehicle is currently around $17.5 billion but is expected to explode to $52.5 billion by 2018.

It may be a conservative estimate because currently the concept of Connected Vehicle is rather vague. It includes stuff that is not really connected – night vision system, lane departure warning and automatic parking system. Once you equip a car with WiFi or mobile broadband and plug these safety systems into the city’s “cloud,” you get something that is truly connected. Something that can communicate with other members of traffic and make clever decisions to cut emissions and improve safety!

The USA Today carried an update on the Connected Vehicle technology test program underway in Michigan.  The federally-funded program carried out by University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute explores safety gains that can be achieved using dedicated short-range communications technology to help cars communicate with one another to prevent accidents.  The video below shows how this technology works.  Also, you can read the accompanying article here.

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America is seeking to hire an event marketing manager for the 2014 World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems, taking place Sept. 7-11, 2014, in Detroit.

The 2014 World Congress on ITS will bring together more than 10,000 of the world’s leading transportation policymakers, researchers, high-tech innovators and business professionals making it the premier ITS event of the year in the Americas. Few places in the world have the concentration of companies, research institutions and deploying agencies in transportation as does Detroit. The “Motor City” brings the opportunity to learn and leverage from the highly innovative transportation culture centered in the region and supports the theme of the 21st World Congress: Reinventing transportation in our connected world.

The primary responsibility of the event marketing manager will be to co-develop and implement an integrated marketing plan for the 2014 World Congress on ITS in partnership with ITS America’s communications and public affairs team. Identifying and establishing relationships with key industry partners as well as nontraditional partners to assist with our marketing efforts will be essential. Prior experience in event marketing and the high-tech transportation industry is strongly desired as well as proven project management experience. Writing skills are paramount and a successful candidate must have at least three years of experience in a position heavily oriented towards writing.

The ideal candidate would be able to begin Aug. 1, 2013. This is a 14-month, full-time position that does not include benefits.
