This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in building NelsonNygaard’s transit practice. Responsibilities

Intern responsibilities will depend on the specific needs of projects that are being undertaken but will likely include research, data collection, spreadsheet analysis, mapping and GIS-based analysis, writing and editing reports, field work, and potentially some minor business development tasks. Candidates must be willing to travel occasionally for project work and must have a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate is someone who holds or is pursuing a degree in urban planning, transportation, or a related field. Experience with transit planning specifically is highly desirable. Potential candidates must demonstrate excellent skills in writing, data analysis, oral presentation and problem solving. The candidate must be able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word as well as familiarity with GIS. Potential candidates may be asked to demonstrate their writing and analytical skills. Above all, we are looking for someone with a passion for transportation and the ability to approach qualitative and quantitative job tasks with sound logic and an eye for quality.

Internship Alert: Post-Graduate Internship @ EcoMobility – ICLEI – Bonn, Germany

ICLEI is a worldwide association of more than 1200  metropolitan regions, cities, towns, counties and municipal associations in 70 countries that are dedicated to implementing sustainable development.  We work in a highly multicultural environment and in a truly global fashion with partners around the globe. We are offering a post-graduate internship in the field of EcoMobility. The intern will be part of ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. Tasks:
• The main task of the intern will be to help preparing the 1st EcoMobility World Congress, which will take place in the Republic of Korea in October.  Specific tasks include:
– Actively develop contacts with possible participating cities and organizations;
– Communicate with partners, funders and sponsors;
– Support the Program Committee;
– Draft briefing sheets about  the main congress topics;
– Prepare communications, announcements and promotional materials;
– Edit the congress web pages.
• The intern will also support the Global Alliance for EcoMobility.  Specific tasks include:
– Develop contacts with possible sponsors and partners pertaining to a newly developed project;
– Keep updated the website, particularly the resource databases and the news section;
– Maintain contact with the Alliance Members.
Requirements
• Academic background: a completed bachelor’s degree in urban planning, transport and mobility policy, civil engineering or related degree. Master graduates are also welcome. Knowledge of sustainable transportation issues is required;
• Professional experience or personal interest in the field of sustainable transportation and sustainable urban planning;
• Language skills: fluent English  preferably native language; further languages welcome;
• Good communication skills, orally and in writing;
• Computer skills: Microsoft Office; experience with web content management (preferably Typo 3);
• Motivation to work in a multicultural environment.
Terms and conditions
• The internship position is available from May 2011 at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The duration will be six months and the EcoMobility congress is included in this period. The internship is within ICLEI’s international Capacity Center. The intern reports to the EcoMobility Officer;
• ICLEI offers interns a cost compensation of Euro 550 after tax and social insurance fees;
• Workings hours:  40h per week; 2 days of paid leave per month (i.e., 12 days for the six months internship);
• Working language:  English;
• Non-EU citizen applications are also welcomed provided they have the possibility of being granted an EU work permit prior to the start of the internship.

Agency Description

The Environmental and Transportation Planning Division has received a grant for a social marketing pilot project that will involve presenting transportation options information specific to individual residents’ travel patterns and needs. This approach, which is based on a model developed in Portland, OR, has been shown to be an effective way to change people’s travel mode choices. The program will test out how well the model can work in an East Coast city.

The division is nationally recognized for its pedestrian and bicycle programs and is responsible for improving the city’s quality of life by working to protect and improve the city’s natural resources and by planning improvements to the city’s transportation system. Environmental planning activities are mainly focused on implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan. Transportation planning activities emphasize bicycle and pedestrian improvements and other vehicle trip reduction measures.

Intern Responsibilities
The intern will assist with the social marketing pilot project through the following duties:
• Coordinate mailings to the target area
• Respond to inquiries about the pilot project
• Help organize and staff promotional events (including some on weekends)
• Distribute promotional materials (posters, doorhangers, etc) within the target area
• Collate transportation options information specific to each respondent’s needs
• Coordinate with vendor for pick-up and delivery of information packets
• Coordinate with partner agencies to maintain supply of information
• Prepare updates for periodic team meetings and partner meetings
• Assist with preparing summary report at the end of the pilot project
• Assist with grant reporting and application for grant renewal
• Other duties as assigned

Desired Skills and Interests
The intern should have a strong commitment to the project goals, be well organized, able to take responsibility for aspects of the project, and be able to work well with groups. The intern should be outgoing and comfortable speaking with people at events and activities. He or she should be comfortable with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Previous related experience is desired. Knowledge and interest in transportation options, specifically in the Cambridge area and familiarity with municipal government operations and procedures would be a plus.

Starting Date: March-April 2010
Ending Date: December 2010; this position is grant funded, and time period may be extended by Department if additional grant funding is approved.
Hours: Average of 22.5 hours per week for remainder of calendar year. Hours are flexible, and will include evenings and weekends.
