As a valued team member of the Capital Projects Delivery Team and under the general direction of the Director of Project Delivery, serves as project manager leading the delivery on multi-jurisdictional projects and/or programs at various stages of the delivery process; manages and facilitates the development and/or administration of assigned projects; ensures that projects and programs meet all applicable laws, regulations, funding requirements, and Commission policies; provides complex staff assistance to management staff; and performs related work as required.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in regional or urban planning, transportation planning, civil engineering, business or public administration.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation related activities with emphasis in administering Federal, State, regional, and/or local transportation programs.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
• Possession of related certifications or licenses desirable.

Key Responsibilities (not a comprehensive listing):

• Serves as project manager on transportation projects implemented by Alameda CTC, which includes resource estimating; analysis, and input into conceptual designs of projects; investigating and resolving problems related to scope of work or cost issues; ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.
• Oversees the development of consultant requests for proposals and qualifications for professional services; evaluates proposals and recommends project award; develops and reviews contract terms and amendments; ensures contractor compliance with Commission standards and specifications and time and budget estimates; reviews and updates deliverables; analyzes and resolves complex problems that may arise.
• Tracks project expenditures, reviews invoices for accuracy and consistency with contractual obligations, and recommends appropriate dispersal’s of allocated funds.
• Manages fund programming and project budgets for Federal, State, and local funds within the authority of the organization; assists local agencies in delivery of State and Federally funded projects; resolves project delivery issues between local agencies and funding agencies.

Job Description

This role will focus on the in integration of traffic engineering practices into the Roadway Sensors products and services portfolio. TRB is co-sponsoring the Traffic Control Device Challenge (TCDC), which aims to promote innovation and stimulate ideas in the traffic control devices area with a goal of improving operations and safety. The focus of this year’s TCDC is supporting advanced vehicle technologies, connected vehicles, or autonomous vehicles. In order to focus the submissions, priorities will be given to those that include pavement markings, traffic signing, and/or work zone devices. Submissions are due October 1, 2016, and guidelines for participation are available online.

If selected as a finalist, submitters should either plan to attend or have a representative attend the TRB Annual Meeting, January 8-12, 2017 in Washington, D.C. The judging for the top three submissions will take place during the TRB Annual Meeting. Just spotted this nice report/update on the world’s tallest (5-story-tall) tunnel boring machine (TBM), Bertha, which will begin work in Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project (SR 99 Tunnel Project). Bertha’s deep-bore tunnel will replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct, which will eventually be torn down. She should begin digging next summer.  As reported below, Bertha’s 41 pieces – the largest weighing up to 900 tons – are being loaded on a single ship in Japan, leaving around mid-March and arrive in Seattle later this month, if all goes well in the choppy seas.

For those curious about the name Bertha, it was chosen as part of a contest for school-aged kids across Washington state. While we are at it, don’t forget to follow the live tweets from Bertha @BerthaDigsSR99, the only TBM in the world with it’s own twitter account (at least until the project finishes).  Pretty cool stuff, right? Also, you can follow the WSDOT blog to stay updated on the project’s progress.

As well as being the largest jet in commercial service, the Airbus A380 represents a bid by Europe’s EADS to take from America’s Boeing the title of world’s most advanced commercial aircraft manufacturer. Critical to that endeavor is the aircraft’s ability to not crash, come apart in midair, or generally imperil the lives of the public. Unhappily for Airbus, Qantas A380 was taking off from Singapore on November 4, 2010, when its number two engine exploded with a loud bang. Flying shrapnel punched a hole in the wing and injured two people on the ground, but the plane was able to land safely. Was the engine’s failure a one-in-a-million coincidence, or a result of a fundamental engineering flaw? The fate of billions of dollars worth of aircraft orders may ride on the answer.

Popular Mechanics looked into the investigation preliminary report into the accident and offers an easy to understand explanations in plain English for us not-so informed average citizens. In short, the report notes that the accident happened due to a fatigued metal element inside the engine, which resulted in oil seepage there by leading to a fire and eventually exploding the internal parts of the engine.  Great explanations along with the reference to the preliminary report makes for an interesting read (at least that’s what my techy brain says).
