Mid-life crisis? How about getting a bike? Hey, that’s what British men are doing

Research suggests a boom in cycling among affluent ‘mid-life crisis’ men and car owners.

“Thirty or 40 years ago, people would ride a bike for economic reasons, but our research suggests that nowadays a bicycle is more a lifestyle addition, a way of demonstrating how affluent you are,” said Michael Oliver, who wrote the report for market researchers Mintel.

I wonder if this is a universal trend or more a regional one. These days I see more and more middle aged men taking to riding the bikes here in the US too. What do you guys think..?

Much has been written about a war between cyclists and drivers, as if the two groups were such polar opposites that they could never cross in a Venn diagram. But according to new research, people who cycle the most are likely to own at least two cars.

Regular cyclists – those who cycle at least once a week – are also disproportionately likely to read broadsheet newspapers, be well educated, have a household income of at least £50,000 per year and shop at Waitrose, claims the latest Mintel report, Bicycles in the UK 2010. In addition, they are twice as likely to be men as women.

Men of a certain age now pride themselves on their bicycle collection. In a documentary last year, Alan Sugar showed off the full-carbon Pinarello machines he has bought for his many residences at a cost of many thousands of pounds each.

His research reveals that bike sales are being driven by 35- to 45-year-old family men. Where this age group might once have treated themselves to a sports car – in an attempt to hang on to their youth – they now invest in a luxury bike instead.

If we saw a patent for an iPod Touch with a camcorder, we wouldn’t bat an eyelash. A Mac with a touchscreen? Unremarkable. But we did a double take when we read that Apple filed a patent for a smart bike.

The company, known more for its must-have consumer gadgets than any niche products, has imagined a smart bicycle system that would let users communicate electronically with other cyclists, sharing such data as speed, distance, time, altitude, elevation, incline, decline, heart rate, power, derailleur setting, cadence, wind speed, path completed, expected future path, heart rate, power, and pace.

To bicyclists, this idea might not seem novel; they can buy attachable computers now. But they also have to pretty serious about the sport: high-end models can cost upwards of $200. Even the LiveRider iPhone bike computer kit costs $100.

London combats gridlock renting one bike at a time

LONDON — The city is launching a bicycle rental program in hopes of easing congestion in a European capital once known for its gridlock.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, an avid cycling enthusiast, put 4,700 out of a planned 6,000 bikes on the road Friday. Under the program, cyclists will be able to borrow bikes from 400 docking stations throughout the city.

At the start, only those who sign up for membership in advance will be eligible to take part. Membership costs 45 pounds a year, or about $70. Tourists or other casual users will not be eligible for at least a month.

Test your mountain-biking skills in this downtown Seattle park

I enjoy mountain biking for the escapism it provides: Disappear into woods, race down single-track paths, lean through turns, crank uphill, all to the audio of an adjacent rushing stream. In one session, I can commune with nature, jack up my adrenaline and check off my daily exercise obligation.

THIS STORY

So I never expected to find myself straddling a mountain bike beneath a roaring interstate overpass in Seattle, a city with enviable proximity to miles of legitimate bike trails.

But here – beneath 12 lanes of Interstate 5, at Exit 168A – a Seattle area cycling club has turned a former hangout for vagrants and junkies into an urban mountain bike park, complete with short trails, jumps, drops, teeter-totters and other so-called “features” designed to satisfy a range of biking abilities.

The I-5 Colonnade is what mountain bikers call a “skills park,” which means that you’re never more than a few feet away from a balance-beam-like log formation or a foot-wide ladder bridge or a “staircase” with 18-inch steps – all features that mountain bikers use to hone balance, jumping and control maneuvers.

NYC, say hello to the Hoop – Beautiful bike rack adds to City streets’ charm

Found this interesting article about NYC’s newly designed bike rack called NYC Hoop on the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Design Museum’s blog.

“Residents with an eye for detail will notice that the city’s newly designed bike rack, the NYC Hoop, is starting to make its presence felt on the streets, as the city tests various securing methods to both sidewalks and subway grates. Designers Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve (of Denmark’s Bettlelab) won the 2008 CityRacks Design Competition, coordinated by theNYCDOT in collaboration with the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum,Google, and Transportation Alternatives.”  This beautiful, easy to use dye cast piece of work is not only easy on the eye but also comes with a very small foot print, making it very suitable for a space crammed uber-Urban environment like NYC.

Interestingly enough, the article posted by Laura Forde notes that the Big Apple is moving ahead with wide-spread deployment plans for the Hoop – nearly 3000 of them..  That must be good news for the ever growing biking population of New York, which has seen tremendous jump in biking recently.

The Seersucker Social, scheduled for Saturday June 12, is set to offer another delightful, unique and alternative entertainment experience by encouraging folks once again to mount their bicycles in high style. While the fall event called for tweed, seersucker has been selected as the ideal vintage fabric of choice to keep cool for the spring ride. Our event partner Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens will provide a fabulous dreamlike setting for the post-ride social.

A $20.00 event ticket will allow participants access to post-ride activities that include admission to the museum, picnicking, lawn games such as croquet and badminton as well as live music to complement the setting and atmosphere. The mansion and all of the estate gardens will be open for tours and other special activities until 8:30pm.

Small plates of delicious food and springtime treats will be made available to all guests by sponsoring restaurants. Beer, wine and a few specialty retro cocktails will help guests relax and enjoy the spectacular setting.

While the ride is free, attendance and registration for the post-ride lawn party is limited. Online registration is encouraged. A limited number of early registrations will be discounted to $15.00 and will be available through select blogs and ticketing venues.

The ride is free for everyone, but you’ll need to register so you can receive the ride course by email. Also registered riders are eligible for prizes and giveaways! You do need to purchase a ticket for the post-ride social. Ticket holders will receive THREE drink tickets (beer/wine/cocktail/juices), wrist band for event access to all games, treats and entertainment. Bike Church builds a wonderful community with bikes and kids

We all have seen many community development programs for children that aims to make them better citizens and keep them out of trouble.  Bike Church, run by Ms. Kerri Martin with the support of Holy Spirit Church,  is one such program that makes you go “wow”.  Martin, 37, offers two programs that teach Asbury Park youths job skills such as bicycle mechanics, the value of volunteerism and work ethics. It is a youth earn-a-bike program operating in the community of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The organization website notes that every Monday, between 4pm-7pm,children in middle school and younger come to The Bike Church to learn how to fix bikes, to practice riding, and to learn about safetyissues related to bicycles.

Martin’s idea for the bike church came from a previous job. While living in Brooklyn prior to her move in 2003 to the Shore, Martin worked for Recycle-a-Bicycle in New York City. The program teaches youths bicycle mechanics and offers job and environmental training.

When Martin, a.k.a. the Bike Lady for some in  Asbury Park,  met the Rev. William McLaughlin in 2006 at Holy Spirit Church, she told him about her idea to salvage bicycles and educate children.   He liked the idea and told her she could use the church’s basement, she said. Martin spent a summer cleaning out the basement, and The Bike Church was founded shortly afterword.

With the growing popularity of the program in the community, Kerri and her team had opened, Second Life Bikes, which is for high school age youth.  At Second Life they also learn bike mechanic skills but in more of a structured bike shop environment. After 15 hours of work, they earn themselves a bicycle.  If you would like to donate your time, your old bicycles, parts, and/or helmets, check out the organization’s Website or email to staff@thebikechurch.org for more information regarding donations.

Lights, Camera, Action! Dazzling new Union Station Bike Transit Center added to Washington, DC’s growing bike infrastructure

City officials gathered Friday morning to open the new Union Station Bike Transit Center, the first secure bicycle parking facility of its kind on the East Coast.  The inside of the helmet-shaped facility includes secure parking for over 100 bikes, about 50 rentable lockers, a relatively spacious changing room, and a bike repair shop that is available to the general public, as well as members.

The Post offers more basic details: it’s 1,700 square feet, costs $100 per year for membership, and will contain changing rooms, personal lockers, and a bike repair shop.  All good things, though it’s a shame they couldn’t find a way to include some showers.

DC Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein noted that 60 people had already signed up for memberships to the facility before it even opened today, as evidence of the potential demand for this kind of service in Washington.  Memberships currently cost $96 for a full year, or $12 per month. All members are additionally charged a $20 annual administrative fee. You can also purchase $1 daily passes in increments of $10 (in other words, 10 days worth of access for $10, 30 days worth of access for $30, and so on). You should normally receive your membership card in the mail about five business days after applying, though this early registration process could take a little longer. Membership cards allow users 24/7 access to the parking area.

The beautiful new facility elicited the following comments (courtesy of Examiner):

  • The Washington Post’s Dr. Gridlock compares the Bike Station to a space ship that “took a wrong turn at the Mall and parked next to the train station.”
  • The Washington Business Journal points out that the DC Bikestation is part of a nationwide network that includes 12 other stations and 200 expected within the next five years. That, perhaps more than this particular bike station, is a significant story that reporters ought to be following.
  • DCist spoke with Andrea White-Kjoss, the CEO of Mobis/Bikestation who says the station “represents D.C’s big statement about what they want to do for bicyclists in the city.”

Car Free Day is an international event celebrated every September 22nd in which people are encouraged to get around without their car – highlighting transit, bicycling, walking and all alternative modes of transportation. By taking a fair number of cars off the roads people who live and work there are given a chance to consider how their neighborhood might look and work with a lot fewer cars. Click here for more information about World Car Free Day.

Washington celebrated Car Free Day for the first time in 2007 with about 1,000 District residents committing to be car free for the day. Last year, Car Free Day expanded to the entire Washington Metropolitan Area, and 5,445 residents throughout the region pledged to be car free. This year we hope even more drivers throughout the region will leave their cars at home or go “car lite” by sharing a ride to work. By taking the Car Free Challenge, participants not only help to improve air quality, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint, but also get a chance to win great prizes at the event.

There are a number of regional resources that can help you be Car Free or Car Lite.

Exploring the car mecca on bicycles! Los Angeles not only has a lot of cars but also got good biking infrastructure too

Today the Washington Post had an interesting article about the burgeoning bike scene in Los Angeles, California.   It was a surprise to learn that there is such a good environment for biking in a city that has been known for its congested traffic and notorious drivers.   Here are some extracts from Amanda Abrams’ special report to the Washington Post:

I should’ve been warned by the reaction of my sister, a 12-year L.A. resident and non-cyclist, when I told her I was planning to spend a few days riding around the city while visiting her. “No way,” she had said incredulously. “The cars here are insane. You have no idea.”

Ah, but I did have some ideas. In spite of its reputation as the country’s car mecca, I’d heard that L.A. was home to a burgeoning bike scene. And as a dedicated bicycle commuter in Washington, I figured “if they can do it, I can do it.”

Despite all the talk of L.A. being a sprawl of neighborhoods connected by freeways, and Angelenos’ perverse pride in living in a place where “no one walks,” it is, in fact, a genuine city. Close inspection of my road map showed an endless grid of quiet residential streets leading to bigger arterial roads, some of which, according to a Los Angeles Department of Transportation bike map, had bike lanes. Bingo. From there, it was no sweat to outline a variety of routes that could get me around the city without harm to life or limb.

Despite some trepidation about the first major road I encountered, safety, it turned out, wasn’t a big issue: Drivers were nowhere near as aggressive as I’d feared. And even the heat could be waited out for an hour or two.

From time to time I’d pass a cyclist and wave. Not everyone waved back, but now and then young professionals and hipsters would glide by, and we’d smile at each other like members of a select club.

It’s a club that’s quickly growing. One afternoon I stopped by the Bicycle Kitchen,, a space in eastern Hollywood run by a nonprofit educational organization where cyclists can come to work on their bikes. I wanted to hear more about what’s being described as a cycling explosion. The place was packed and humming, intent bicycle owners wheeling their vehicles in for a consultation or reaching for tools to do some tinkering themselves.

With the impatience typical of recent converts, new riders are demanding that the city improve its cycling infrastructure. But Michelle Mowery, LADOT’s bicycle coordinator, said it’s not so simple. “If we want another bike lane, we need 10 more feet of roadway,” she explained. “Something has to go: a travel lane or on-street parking.” With the vast majority of residents driving full-time, neither of those two options is going anywhere. Instead, the department has drafted a bicycling master plan, due to be released at the end of the year, laying out a network of bicycle-friendly routes on neighborhood streets.

It turns out that Los Angeles has some excellent non-street bike routes, too, such as the one I discovered that first day as an alternative to the faceless boulevards. Ballona Creek runs from central L.A. to the Pacific Ocean, and though it’s not the prettiest waterway in the world — picture a creek bed sealed in concrete — it’s paired with a dedicated bikeway that ducks under main roads. As I approached the sea, bird life along the creek picked up, with scores of gulls, pelicans and graceful white egrets socializing in the water.
