What 0->62 mph in 3.2 seconds and 78mpg looks like? Porsche debuts screaming hot “mother of all hybrids”

August 17, 2010 at 2:13 pm

(source: Porsche via Wired)

Hybrids and super fast were usually not spelled in the same sentence until Porsche opened a can (rather a car) of   surprise for the motoring world with its new hybrid 918 Spyder in Geneva earlier this year.

Now for the first time some of those potential customers got to see and hear Porsche’s latest creation in person. The 918 was flown over from Germany for the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Montery, California. The video above shows a covert shakedown drive before the car was shown to the public.

Publication Alert: USDOT report examines the effects of the February 2010 snowstorms on airline performance

August 17, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Remember those crazy storms that dumped loads of snow on the cities and towns along the Eastern seaboard and many mid-Western states across the US during February 2010?  Apart from the impact on the surface transportation modes, these storms wreaked havoc on the aviation sector, terribly disrupting the  performance of the whole sector.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has released a special report that explores how several February 2010 snowstorms in the Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast disrupted air travel at airports across the United States.  Quite an interesting read and for your reading pleasure it is provided below.

SEATTLE –  A former supervisor for the federal Transportation Security Administration has pleaded guilty to stealing $20,000 worth of jewelry and other items from checked luggage at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Pepper was fired in July 2009 after another TSA worker saw him removing items from checked luggage. Surveillance video confirmed it, and investigators discovered Pepper had pawned the items. Prosecutors say they included gold diamond rings and sterling silver necklaces and earrings.

NASA’s GRIP hurricane airborne research mission set for “shakedown”

August 16, 2010 at 5:33 pm

The first flight of NASA‘s hurricane airborne research mission is scheduled to take off from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Tuesday, Aug. 17. NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft will be making a planned five-hour flight along the Gulf Coast from western Florida to Louisiana primarily as a practice run for the many scientific instruments aboard.

The target for Tuesday’s “shakedown” flight is the remnants of Tropical Depression 5, a poorly organized storm system whose center is currently hugging the coasts of Mississippi and Louisiana and moving westward. While forecasters do not expect this storm system to strengthen significantly before it reaches landfall in Louisiana, the system offers the DC-8’s seven instrument teams an opportunity to try out their equipment on possible convective storms. Rainfall rates, wind speed and direction below the airplane to the surface, cloud droplet sizes, and aerosol particle sizes are just some of the information that these instruments will collect.

The #Onion News – Millions Of Barrels Of #Oil Safely Reach Port In Major Environmental Catastrophe

August 13, 2010 at 4:41 pm

God bless The Onion – America’s Finest News Source.

Amplify’d from www.theonion.com

PORT FOURCHON, LA—In what may be the greatest environmental disaster in the nation’s history, the supertanker TI Oceania docked without incident at the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port Monday and successfully unloaded 3.1 million barrels of dangerous crude oil into the United States.

According to witnesses, the catastrophe began shortly after the tanker, which sailed unimpeded across the Gulf of Mexico, stopped safely at the harbor and made contact with oil company workers on the shore. Soon after, vast amounts of the black, toxic petroleum in the ship’s hold were unloaded at an alarming rate into special storage containers on the mainland.

From there, experts confirmed, the oil will likely spread across the entire country’s infrastructure and commit unforetold damage to its lakes, streams, and air.

“We’re looking at a crisis of cataclysmic proportions,” said Charles Hartsell, an environmental scientist at Tufts University. “In a matter of days, this oil may be refined into a lighter substance that, when burned as fuel in vehicles, homes, and businesses, will poison the earth’s atmosphere on a terrifying scale.”

GM prepares its getaway (i.e., IPO) – The @Economist reads the future

August 13, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Alright..That’s two straight quarters of stellar performance in a crazy economic climate with consumers holding onto their wallets tightly. Does this mean GM got out of the dark? Probably! But the million dollar, unanswered & unclear question: – what’s next for the behemoth as it gets ready to jettison the old image and launch into the future? The economist dives into educating us with what’s ahead for GM…

Amplify’d from www.economist.com

ED WHITACRE, a former head of AT&T who took over the reins at General Motors last December and who yesterday announced his own imminent departure, deserves a small round of applause for what he has achieved. Just over a year ago, GM was taking its first faltering steps on the road to recovery, as it emerged from its government-orchestrated “quick-rinse” bankruptcy. But despite shedding debt, dropping several brands, shrinking its bloated dealer network, cutting jobs and securing concessions from those workers who remained, there were still plenty of sceptics.

Could a company that had lost $88 billion in the four years to 2009, had only been kept afloat with $60 billion from American and Canadian taxpayers and which had become known as “Government Motors” really shuffle off its culture of failure so easily? However, after reporting net earnings of $1.3 billion for the three months to the end of June yesterday—the carmaker’s second profitable quarter in a row and its best since 2004—the evidence that “New GM”, as it likes to call itself, is a different business is mounting. So much so that later today or early next week, the company is expected to file an S-1 registration document with the Securities and Exchange Commission, paving the way for an initial public offering before the end of the year.
