The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Joint Program Office (JPO) is looking for a Transportation Specialist to serve as program manager and technical expert responsible for the development and direction of the Multimodal ITS Research and Deployment portions of the Department’s ITS program.

The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent communications skills, expertise in ITS research and development topics, such as highway operations, transit, and ITS deployment.  The incumbent will work closely with the highway, motor carrier, rail, and transit industries to promote ITS initiatives and with the ITS community to ensure that multimodal systems operations needs are being accommodated.  The incumbent will champion the capabilities and interests of the ITS community, often to a constituency that is not knowledgeable about or sympathetic to its needs.  In this capacity, the incumbent works to increase consensus building among its partners and work towards meeting National ITS program goals and objectives related to the deployment of ITS solutions.

As a Transportation Specialist (Transit Rail), you will serve as a technical and policy advisor responsible for any required development, implementation, and instruction supporting Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in the establishment of a Public Transportation Safety Certification Training Program for Federal and State personnel.  S/he is responsible for serving as a nationally recognized expert on rail safety and security training.  As a recognized expert, s/he will regularly participate as a technical resource and advisor on technically complex and politically sensitive transit rail safety and security issues.

The ideal candidate is a recognized technical expert on transit rail safety and security, and has leadership and team building skills and techniques such as group facilitation, coordination, coaching, problem solving, and interpersonal communication.  The ideal candidate can integrate work processes and products, and obtain resources in liaison with the supervisor to lead project team members to meet program and production goals.  S/he must have the ability to use consensus building, negotiating, coalition building, and conflict resolution techniques to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to interact appropriately in highly charged emotional situations for the purpose of influencing managers or other officials to accept and implement findings and recommendations for justifying and resolving matters involving significant or controversial issues.  The incumbent will share expertise through publications and presentations in respected forums, knowledge sharing venues within appropriate DOT communities, and mentoring of technical staff.

Responsibilities: Communities for Transit is seeking a full-time project assistant to help the organization’s executive director and program director implement projects to advance the organization’s public education and organizational development goals. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (National Partnership) is seeking a professional and detail-oriented candidate with experience in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy to join the National Partnership as the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Fellow. This is a temporary, contract position.

The Active Transportation Fellow will work with the Regional Network Manager and Greater Washington DC Regional Policy Manager to advocate for improved transportation funding allocations and policies for Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets and walking and bicycling. Please review the scope of work for the position for detailed information and application instructions.

Required qualifications for the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Policy Fellow include: demonstrated experience in social media; student work or personal work in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy; knowledge of Safe Routes to School and/or Complete Streets; ability to write case studies, participate in work groups and present to a variety of audiences; self-starter; detail-oriented; proficient with social media such as Twitter, Facebook and WordPress, PCs and with MS Office software. The successful candidate will work from their home office with their own personal computer, internet access and telephone.
